Description

This very large oil painting by Henry Tanworth Wells (1828–1903) hangs at Arisaig House. It was a wedding gift to Gertrude Astley from her sisters when she married in 1883. It was painted specifically for Arisaig House. The painting was bequested to the West Highland Museum, but is on long term loan to Arisaig House where it is still displayed in the space it was intended for. The painting can be viewed by the public by appointment. The painting is titled "Letters and News at the Lochside" and depicts the postman Donald MacDonald of Achraig, Duncan McCrae (the boy), F. D. P. Astley, Sir John Millais, John MacDonald, boat captain: Donald MacDonald, a MacRae, Sir Henry Halford, Angus MacDonald (the water bailiff of Arienskill, and father of the yacht captain), and Mr Henry Evans.
